Should Education be subsidized?

As i think of how costly the education is for Outsiders in Europe and the debate of reducing the Subsidy on Education, the question often asked is should Education be subsidized especially as Government and Country doesn't actually doesn't get anything back from the student in Return or is it?

In India, there was always a big Hue and Cry our Country's precious resources was spent on subsidizing high quality educations in IIT (Indian Institute of Technology - supposed to be one of the Best educational Institution in World and personally think so as their starting salary after they graduated was 10 times mine at least) when all the graduates who came out of IIT took high Salary Jobs in Multi-Nationals in USA and other countries. These was also the trend for other Graduates also who decided to go abroad in various field instead of staying back.

There was so many talks of Brain Drain.. but as they say in Hinduism of Karma, doing good also comes back to benefit you and India has been famous for Soft power and all these people have paid back in other ways. I can give Examples of CEOs of major companies being Indian Origin and these people have inspired the next generation to do well as they felt that studying was a path to prosperity instead of just working your way out.

Similarly, i think Education should be considered as an investment in the Future of the Country or dare i say for betterment of EARTH as a planet.and not only it should be compulsory but should be considered as the basic needs like the Maslov's 3 basic needs of Food, clothing and shelter. I remember my father telling me only one thing, you get admission to engineering college on your merit and i will somehow arrange money to pay your fees and he struggled but paid my fees, even through my Annual fees were more then his Monthly take home.

Similarly, no Graduates should start his professional career with a huge student loans out their weighing him down. He should be able to think about planning his career with out that burden.

But then, who bears the cost as nothing is free in the world and somebody needs to pay for it. Teachers need to be paid, equipment's need to be purchased. This is where Government and Corporate should step in to fund the education and they do. But is that enough
